Uruguay’s Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos, pointed out this Thursday (6), in a panel during the Global Agribusiness Forum, in Punta del Este, in his country, that there is no competition for land between agriculture destined for food cultivation and that directed to energy production, with the Southern Cone being a great example of how these are complementary activities and chains.
“We are here in the best region in the world to meet this global food and energy challenge. We are major producers of food, fiber and energy,” he emphasized. According to Mattos, the countries in the region have invested in technology with the aim of increasing productivity and thus responding to the global demand for food and energy. “In this regard, from the farmer’s perspective, we have observed that energy products from agricultural sources are becoming more profitable.”
